City of Oberon
Population Breakdown: 20
million inhabitants at any given time.
Prometheans 25%
Humans 20%
Noro 5%
Others 45%; thousands of races from the Three Galaxies and
the Megaverse visit Oberon. Typically, each represents less than
0.5% of the total population. Virtually all races of the
Megaverse that have any interest in learning have at least a
handful of individuals living in Oberon.
Oberon is a giant city dedicated to the acquisition of
knowledge. In the center of Oberon is a giant pyramid five miles
across at the base and nearly 40 miles high. It's origins are
known only by the person that the is the cities namesake Oberon
himself. The city walls encircle Oberon in a 10-mile radius of
the pyramid. The land surrounding the pyramid is mostly dedicated
to farming and various other agricultural endeavors, with
scattered schools and temples dedicated to the wilderness and its
gods. A further 10-miles outside the city gates there are three
intersecting Ley Lines forming a triangle with Oberon as their
center.
The Pyramid (Babylon)
2001 levels make up the pyramid at the center of Oberon
(sometimes referred to as Babylon). The exterior walls are made
of 500' of MDC stone. Each level is 100' high with 50' of MDC
stone making up the ceilings and floors. The only means of
transportation in the pyramid is LPCs (leather personnel
carriers, AKA shoes) vehicles and beasts of burden are not
permitted. To ascend to the next level there is only one
staircase; it follows the outside wall. Each step is 100' wide
and shallow enough that a person in a wheelchair could easily
ascend the steps unassisted. Anyone the attempts to climb the
stairs must tread on each and every step, failure to do this will
result in that person returning to the start point of their
ascension at the completion of the circuit (any teleportation
attempts will automatically fail). It takes about five hours for
the average person to ascend to the next level and just under 14
months to reach the top from the first floor (the average person
walks at about four miles an hour).
Each level consists of a small city in and of itself, made up
of shops, universities, and temples. At some point in the pyramid
there is a temple dedicated to every god, known and unknown. This
also goes for the universities and shops, somewhere there is a
school that will teach you what it is that you wish to learn and
a shop to sell you what you wish to buy. There is no pattern or
lay out, homes shops, and schools are placed entirely at random.
Above all Oberon is a city of learning; this is what attracts so
many Prometheans.
Money
Oberon runs on a barter system, the citizens believe that
knowledge is more important commodity than wealth and would
rather be taught something new than to be paid for goods and
services. Some places will accept universal credits, and most
places will accept precious metals and stones (these are
excellent trade with most mages).
Heat and Light
The climate inside of the pyramid is magically controlled, it
is always a comfortable 72 degrees, except in areas that require
a higher or lower temperature (simulated rain forest, desert ect.
And areas where races that are more comfortable in a different
climate). The light inside of the pyramid is also magically
created and it is always brightly lit giving the impression of
continual daylight. Because the light has no direct source there
are no shadows cast anywhere in Babylon. Time also does not seem
to exist in the pyramid, watches and clocks do not work, people
eat when they're hungry and sleep when they're tired. Schedules
and appointments do not exist (an hourglass will work but are so
impractical that no one bothers).
Security
At the entrance to both the city and the pyramid there are two TE-MK Glitter Boys (60% of the
Oberon security force are Prometheans) posted as centuries.
Roving patrols of pairs of TE-MK Glitter Boys police the streets.
Because almost no one really has anything of value, and most
anything of value can be easily acquired wit ha little work and
haggling, crime is almost non existent. Any crimes that are
committed, the suspect is taken before the Jury of One and
judged. The Jury of One is a 20th level Seer (chosen by Oberon himself) who will read
minds and objects and determine guilt. Any attempt to conceal
thoughts during an attempted mind read are considered a plea of
guilty and a penalty is assessed. Any previously unknown crimes
revealed by the Jury of One are still punishable by law
(criminals have no rights).
Penalties:
The punishment fits the crime in Oberon; it is basically
ancient Arabian law.
Adultery (men): Castration*
Adultery (women): Sealed birth canal*
Assault: Public flogging
Drug Trafficking to adults: Legal
Drug Trafficking to minors: Death
Kidnapping: Death
Lying: Loss of tongue*
Murder: Death
Prostitution: Legal
Rape: Death
Slavery: Death
Theft: First offense: Loss of hand*

*A Flesh Sculptor (see Nightbane ©) will carry out these

Living Conditions
There are no social classes in Oberon, poverty is
non-existent. Anyone who refuses to be a beneficial member of
society is expelled out of the city and banned until such time as
it can be proven the they have mended their lazy ways. Otherwise
everyone in Oberon lives a modest lifestyle (flaunting wealth is
considered to be in bad taste and impresses no one).
